The 2013 schedule won't be set until probably late Dec or early Jan. For 2013 we'll be doing one, maybe two "SAC Style" events. The overall event objectives will be very similar but there will be some rules and procedural changes.

Off the bat, we will be requiring the use of a SPOT tracking device by all teams.

    Thanks for starting this Zak.

#1 - I'm wishing for an estimate of pack weight minus rifle for someone trying hard to travel light.
#2 - Can you give me some idea about how much ammo is needed for each gun?
#3 - I'm looking at appropriate packs. The only thing I can find that seems purpose built is the Eberlestock stuff. I've heard mixed reviews of their product, so I'm wondering what guys used who were happy with their choice.

I'm looking forward to trying this event next year.

Aim for the lightest pack you can given the require gear list and your water requirements. The winning teams used lightweight packs and basically only had the required gear plus water, very few extras.

Ammo will depend on the event and I always give guidance before it, but in this one we recommended 50 rifle, 100 pistol total, 100 carbine. In actuality, less was used.

Some teams used the Eberlestock packs but some of the feedback was that sitting down with the pack on was hard and that the suspension wasn't great. The Kifaru lightweight pack was praised.

Any idea how they carried the rifle with the Kifaru?

I'm not sure, they might have used the rifle carrier Kifaru sells, or just lashed it to the pack

Are the rifle targets at known ranges, or will I need my rangefinder?

    • Instructor
    You'll need to range them

I think I read all ammo needs to be in magazines. Is that really true? Ten 10 round mags for my AICS is on the order of $700.

I misread it and didn't realize it's only carbine and pistol ammo that must be in magazines. Thanks for clearing that up.

    Zak,

What size targets should I expect as the rifle shooter?

Anywhere from 1 MOA up to full silhouettes.

    Zak,

Will there be opportunity for spectators to watch any part of the SAC?

Yes, some portions of the course will be observable

We used 1 kifaru ku, and 1 elberlestock. Both worked fine, the elberlestock was easier to get the gun in and out of , the kifaru had a custom built 'bag' but still took a few straps and buckles to get everything out. The Ku is light, but if I'd had my Kifaru zulu (heavy duty), I would have drug it through some sections for a few more points.

Pack weight, including rifle, ends up a little under ~46ish, primarly because you end up carrying a lot of water. I was averaging 120+oz most stretches.

Any idea when details for 2013 will be released?

I was wondering if you could possibly tell me where the 2014 SAC will be held, I would like to praticipate in the 2013 comp but there is no way I am in the right kind of shape for something like that right now, and my partner is currently still in the army and he will be getting out in 2014. And i was also wondering if people can come and watch some of the comps, I live in Rock Springs Wyoming and I would like to come and watch the snipers hide cup in Douglas to maybe come and get a feel for things and see what its all about. Thanks again

Nope, we'll decide where we want to do 2014 late in 2013.

No problem coming to watch. You still have to sign the waiver and follow staff directions on where you can be

    thanks
