Yesterday's Sporting Rifle Match (SRM) was great. I never did get the final shooter count from Mike, but I believe we had about 60 shooters. The weather got to the mid 80s and the wind was varible from zero to about fifteen MPH from all directions, sometimes within the same shot string. :D

There were lots of new faces and lots of veteran SRM shooters with ThunderBeast cans. My match lesson yesterday is to put a pair of clear, wraparound, shooting glasses on my match gear list. Stage three had a wicked warm wind that blew from the west and up the enbankment carrying dirt and grit straight into my eyes. This really affected my ability to concentrate. Anyway, it seemed a good time was had by all.

I'd like to make it down to the WC for one of these (or more) matches in 2012. I shoot high power metallic rifle silhouette competitions in the Denver area (Colorado Rifle Club). I shoot a hunting class 7mm-08 (9lbs) in those matches and shoot 130gr Matchkings and also 168gr Matchkings and I am wondering which of my loads would be best for the SRM. My 130 MKs are at about 2700fps with 38gr of Varget (we shoot light loads to reduce recoil), and my 168gr MKs are at about 2475fps also with 38gr of Varget.

I am guessing that I'd need to use the 168gr MKs for the longer ranges. I'm just trying to sort out whether or not I can get away with my standard loads that I use for silhouette. I'd like to not have mixed loads hanging around. I am all about standardization. :)

I also have a 6.5 Creedmoor on order but I won't see that from Savage until the end of October and the barrel from Shilen should arrive about the same time. This will be my Standard class silhouette rifle (10lbs 2oz). Anybody shooting one of these in the SRM? I know Zak has some experience with it.

Those can't be max load for 7-08, can they?

I would go with the one that has less wind at 400+.

My 130gr load is below minimum and my 168gr load is only .5 grain above minimum.

The 130gr is about 14" drift at 400yds and the 168gr is about 12.4", roughly.

If you have time, I'd recommend just running up your 168 load to max provided the accuracy is there.

Trent, the SRM is a wind game. You want to run a high BC at decent velocity. The various short action 6.5's are probably the most popular as they provide good wind performance with reasonable recoil and barrel life. The 7-08 will do fine to start, but you'll be a little more competitive if you take Zak's advise and put a bit more powder behind the 168. No need to wait for the Creedmore as the match is pretty casual - just bring what you've got and you'll have some fun.

Thanks guys. I won't be able to make the Sept 4th match. I've been on the road to too many matches lately and we have our Colorado state championships in September (two full weekends for High Power and Smallbore), so I need to spend that weekend with my wife or all hell is gonna break loose. Looks like Sept 4th is the last match for 2011.So more than likely I will be bringing the Creedmoor next season.

Some of you fellas ought to knock the dust off your britches and come out and shoot silhouette. We have high power matches the first Sunday of each month. We shoot at 4 distances, 200m, 300m, 385m and 500m. All shot from the standing position at steel targets shaped like Chickens, Pigs, Turkeys and Rams. It is incredibly difficult (er... challenging) and addicting. Each match is 40 shots and we shoot 2 matches (one for Hunter gun and one for Heavy gun). Here is a link to our blog. The schedule to our matches is in the upper right.

I know this might not be the proper place for this, but... I met a fella out at the Pawnee Grasslands a few weeks ago shooting one of your 338P-1 suppressors on a .300 ultramag. He was out shooting with his daughter and they were both super nice. He let me take a couple shots with his 300UM, and I must say... wow. Your suppressors are amazing. Anyway, he was driving a work van that I think said "Loveland Painting".

When he left I found a couple pieces of his 300UM brass and a couple of his .308 brass on the ground. Maybe he wants them? He said he might know you guys at Thunder Beast.
